Mumbo Gumbo is introducing a new series of weekly Jazz evenings from July 13 - August 10 with some of the best local Jazz acts & renowned international Jazz musicians.
JULY 13 (OPENING NIGHT): CHRISTIAN BUCHER + RICK COUNTRYMAN
Christian Bucher—a Swiss improvisational drummer—studied musicology, art history and literature at the University of Bern, and Jazz music at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Zurich, and will be joined by local jazz saxophonist Rick Countryman for a Free Jazz improv session, which will be recorded live at the time of the event.
JULY 20 - COSMIK FUNKSHUN
Cosmik Funkshun is a local avant-garde cosmic Jazz band, consisting of Stella Ignacio (Voice), Jose Antinero (Trombone), Tusa Montes (Congas), Rick Countryman (Sax), Bergan (Bass) and will be rounded up with a special guest performance by Christian Bucher (Drums).
JULY 27 - PROJECT YAZZ
Project Yazz is a four-piece experimental jazz band reinterpreting classic and popular music, stretching the boundaries of their original versions. The band features Faye Yupano (Vocals), Juni Sitaca (Keyboard), Karlo Soriano (Drums) and Bergan Nuñez (Bass) as they explore different music genres in the context of Jazz improvisation and arrangement. The group presents fresh new takes on mainstream music, incorporating traditional and modern Jazz concepts in their performances.
AUGUST 3 - BRATPACK
Local band Bratpack—consinsting of David de Koenigswarter (Bass), RJ Pineda (Piano), Gilbert Asuque (Drums) and Christine Mercadodelivers (Vocals)— has its own unique style: a bold fusion of blues, jazz, soul, and pop, and is constantly redefining blues and solidifying their mark in the local and global music scene. The band performs with heavy arrangements and high energy to ensure an exciting time at every performance.
AUGUST 10 (FINALE) - SABU TOYOZUMI
Sabu Toyozumi is one of the world’s great improvising drummers. During a career spanning five decades he has worked with a huge array of musicians from around the globe, from Jazz icon Charles Mingus to Japanese noise maverick Keiji Haino. Emerging in the late ‘60s with other notable pioneers of free music in Japan, Kaoru Abe and Masayuki Takayanagi, Sabu Toyozumi has developed a unique approach to the drum kit. A devotee to the way of Zen master Watazumido, Toyozumi’s playing is equal parts discipline and freedom.
All Thursday nights will be supported by Mumbo Gumbo Resident DJs from 8pm onwards, and each live act will start at 10pm.
