Norman Quentin Cook, known by his stage name Fatboy Slim is an English DJ, musician and record producer born on July 1963 in Bromley, United Kingdom. In the 1980s as he started his career in music, Cook was the bassist for the indie-rock band Housemartins, who achieved a UK number-one single with their acapella cover of Caravan Love. After the Housemartins split, Cook formed the electronic band Beats International in Brighton, who produced the number-one single, “Dub Be Good to Me.” In 1996, he adopted the name Fatboy Slim which he explains doesn’t really have a deep history about himself. It’s just an oxymoron, a word that can’t exist. It’s ironic and goofy, which kind of suits him.

Cook achieved his first solo hit in 1989, “Blame It on the Bassline” and second solo album, “Better Living through Chemistry” which contained the Top 40 UK hit, “Everybody Needs a 303.” His next work was the single, “The Rockafeller Skank”, released prior to the album “You’ve come a Long Way”, 1998. “Praise you” was Fatboy Slim’s first UK solo number one with its music video winning numerous awards. On September 1999, he performed “Praise You” at the MTV Music Awards in New York City in which he won three awards including “Breakthrough Video Award”.

Moving a little forward, in June 2011, the smashing Fatboy Slim performed at the Great Wall Electro Festival in China where 5,000 people turned up projecting lasers onto the Great Wall of China! Playing a DJ set there, he says, “was one of those boxes that needed to be ticked off.” The trip to China was part of an epic journey that began in Ibiza and led him to flying around the world.

At the moment, Fatboy Slim is concentrating on DJing rather than making records. He’s been having a great line up in the past years and this year is another fruitful one for him. “I did 70 gigs last year”, he says. “I’ve never done that many before. I’m just really enjoying doing the gigs as a career. This is my job and I love doing it.” February 21 this year, he was in London, UK for a big show, February 27 in Glasgow, Scotland SSE Hydro, the next day in Manchester, England, March second in Dublin, Ireland, March 15 in Milan, Italy, April 05 for the Chorus Festival in Paris, France and finally--- he’s playing for us only here at Cove Manila on April 12!

Fatboy Slim’s shows these days involve not just playing his own patented brand of “Party Acid House”, but a complex audio-visual production. “I’m technically a video jockey now. We write scripts for all the tunes, make films. In the past, I used to have to literally hold up the next record I was going to play to the guy who does my visuals, and he’d have to find he images to match it, and they were never synched. But now, because of the technology, no matter what speed I play at, even if I just chop quickly into it, the visuals are all synchronized. It’s a show.“We’re pushing new limits. No one knows what the cut-off age limit of a DJ is. And apparently, it’s not yet.” he roars in laughter. “I take great delight in that.”
