CLYTEMNESTRA
A modern look at the classical depiction of a woman scorned. A woman condemned by a jury of men, Clytemnestra faces the consequences of the murder she committed to redeem her honor. The juxtaposition of classic and modern explores themes of redemption in betrayal and triumph in tragedy. (Running time: approx 60mins)
BACKGROUND TO THE TEXT
In Classic Greek Mythology, Clytemnestra is the queen of Argos and Mycenae. She is the wife of Agamemnon with whom she has four children: Iphigenia, Chrysothemes, Elektra, and Orestes. When her sister, Helen, is brought to Troy, the Trojan War begins. Agamemnon sails for Troy to help his brother, Menelaos, win Helen back. Agamemnon sacrifices his daughter Iphigenia to secure the success of the Greeks at Troy, a sacrifice that Clytemnestra harbors as a reason to patiently wait at home until she can exact her revenge. While waiting, she takes Agamemnon's nephew, Aegisthus as her lover. After ten years, Agamemnon returns and she kills him and his captive Trojan concubine, Cassandra. Orestes attempts to kill Clytemnestra upon the prodding of Elektra but takes pity and instead puts her before the men of the city to serve as jury who will determine her fate.
The play begins shortly before Agamemnon's return to Mycenae.
