In 25 January 2017 (Wednesday), Kamuning Public Radio's strange, noisy offering 3 days before the Year of the Cock, we feature DIY sonic shaman Arma Agharta from Panevėžys, Lithuania in the first stop of his Sonic Pilgrimage Asia tour, Fil-Am synth-builder Alex Abalos from the Bay Area taking sonic cues from the Metro Manila soundscape, and a fuzzed out global psych set by Manila's Nonplus.
Odd bodily movements and colorful costumes run aplenty with sound performance artist and curator Arma Agharta (Armantas Gečiauskas), whose works combines musique concrete with unbridled eruptions of chaotic noise and hypnotic psychedelic ritual to create live electronic soundscapes improvised with soviet vintage electronics, acoustic implements and circuit-bent objects, replete with dadaist humour, spontaneous games and glossolalia. His music has been released exclusively on cassettes. While being among Lithuania’s most travelled sound artists—appearing in festivals like Other Worlds (UK), Noise & Fury (Russia), Sonic (Denmark), SOTU (Netherlands)—Arma still maintains close collaborations with Lithuanian sound artist Arturas Bumšteinas and Greek improviser Tasos Tafarel Stamou.
Alex Abalos’s Puzzle (Alex Puzzle) is a vessel for waveform communication and frequency alchemy, to help him connect with communities in art, education and punk rock. Cutting his teeth in the rhythmic live drum-laden modular noise of The Edomites and organic-electronic “dirt wave” of the Secret Sidewalk quintet, his groups have performed in “Change the Beat” night (thrown by Mophono, Citizen Ten, and The Gaslamp Killer), Low End Theory (Los Angeles and San Francisco), South by Southwest (Grown Kids Radio SXSW Showcase). Puzzle’s KPR set will premiere new compositions pre-arranged and improvised for modular synths, home-made gear and field recordings, inspired by his first trip back in Manila since forever.
One of the few consistent female sonic experimenters and DJs in the tarugo-stricken Manila experimental beat scene, Nonplus (Linus Pauling) has earned cred since 90s Blow Up Da Spot, to mid 00s Subflex, and ninja sets in places between. She’ll have her deck needles ready for a dusty finger DJ set of crate-dug grooves, running the gamut from library records to kosmiche tunes.
These 3 artists will also appear at that only other experimental music production in the metro, Ruthless on 26 January 2017 at Today x Future.
